José Bernardo de la Meana, Jesus Washes Peter's Feet

Circa 1753-62
Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo, Spain

This is the episode recounted in John 13:1-20: Jesus washes the feet of the apostles at the Last Supper. He starts with St. Peter, who at first demurs. Peter's sandals can be seen at the base of his chair; on the left, another apostle is removing his.

The subsequent events of that evening are pictured in the half-circles on the ends of the composition. On the right, Jesus prays that if possible "this cup" (his sacrifice on the cross) might be avoided; the angel above with the cup and cross signifies the answer. On the left, the crowd of soldiers comes to arrest him.
